Professional experience

Willeke is a professor of applied research in the field of Social Cohesion, Democracy and the Rule of Law at HU University of Applied Research. Her expertise lies in the field of good governance, integrity, and moral craftsmanship. She studies how social networks help strengthen or weaken the democratic rule of law through the influence they exert on the system of checks and balances. She has extensive experience conducting National Integrity System Assessments on behalf of Transparency International. She serves as the National Rapporteur on Corruption for the European Commission. She has recently become a member of the LOWI advisory committee, an independent advisory body in the complaints procedure for possible violations of research integrity. Willeke is driven by the principle of practising democracy in everyday life, for example, within neighbourhoods and organisations, and by the importance of involving expertise based on lived experience in policymaking.
