Copernicus Data Stores (CDS and ADS): Modernising Europe’s Open Climate and Atmosphere Data Platforms

Briefing
November 2026

The Copernicus Data Stores (CDS and ADS) are the EU’s open platforms for accessing climate and atmospheric data, operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Modernised between 2022 and 2025, the platforms bring together extensive datasets and analysis tools, providing reliable, accessible information for policymakers, researchers, businesses and public authorities. In 2025, they delivered 95–130 terabytes of data daily, handled around 475,000 requests per day and successfully completed more than 96% of requests. The project demonstrates how modern digital infrastructure and open data can support evidence-based policymaking, climate resilience and innovation across Europe. It received third prize in the EPSA 2025-26 category Investing in Infrastructure, Mobility and Energy.
