Understanding the EPPO’s competences and how these affect national criminal justice based on Regulation (EU) 2017/1939 is therefore vital in efficiently handling criminal investigations and prosecutions related to crimes against the EU’s financial interests.

The course provides a practice-oriented introduction to the EPPO’s working structures and functions and explains how the EPPO will collect evidence, investigate and prosecute in cooperation with the national authorities in combating crimes against the EU’s financial interests.
The objective of the course is to prepare legal practitioners for working with the EPPO, by explaining the EPPO’s competences and the procedures it follows and how national law complements them. By the end of the course, participants will be able to answer the following questions:
Participants will learn how to work with the EPPO on a daily basis in combating crimes against the EU’s financial interests, what procedural safeguards are in place and what judicial review is available in cases handled by the EPPO.
The course especially welcomes criminal law practitioners who deal with economic and financial crimes, fraud, organised crime, crimes against the financial interests of the EU, VAT fraud and related crimes, but is also open to those who wish to know more about this very new body of the European Union.
The course is based on presentations that are supported by practice-oriented discussions led by experts who have an in-depth understanding of the EPPO. Departing from the very rich academic writing on the EPPO, the course will focus on the practical issues arising in the daily operation of the EPPO.

Participants will get access to the EIPA learning management system and benefit from the learning paths to acquaint themselves with the respective policy areas covered by the course. In this way participants will benefit from guided learning before and after the course which will complement the face-to-face presentations and discussions offered throughout the course. Legal practitioners working in the field of criminal law especially dealing with economic and financial crimes, fraud, organised crime, crimes against the financial interest of the EU, VAT fraud and related crimes as members of the national judiciary, prosecutorial services, law enforcement and customs officials and defence lawyers.

Fee
The fee includes documentation and refreshments, two lunches and a reception. Accommodation and travel costs are at the expense of the participants or their administration.
Discounts
EIPA offers a discount to all civil servants working for one of EIPA’s supporting countries, and civil servants working for an EU institution, body or agency.

Civil servants coming from the following EIPA supporting countries are entitled to get the reduced fee: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden.
For all other participants, the regular fee applies.

Cancellation policy
For administrative reasons you will be charged €150 for cancellations received within 15 days before the activity begins. There is no charge for qualified substitute participants. EIPA reserves the right to cancel the activity up to 2 weeks before the starting date. In that case, registration fees received will be fully reimbursed. EIPA accepts no responsibility for any costs incurred (travel, accommodation, etc.).
