This course examines the EU's legal and policy framework for protecting fundamental rights, with a focus on the Charter of Fundamental Rights. It delves into the relationship of EU fundamental rights to other sets of legal rules and other legal systems, especially the EU’s accession to the European Court of Human Rights and analyses the prohibition on discrimination, the right to the protection of personal data, the prohibition on torture, and inhuman or degrading treatment, as well as the developing human rights due diligence legislation.
