European Housing Policy Network Explores Housing Innovations in Maastricht

News

Representatives from across Europe gathered at the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) in Maastricht this week for the second time European Housing Policy Network logo dark blue on white backgroundunder the European Housing Policy Network (EHPN). This initiative, led by the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and supported by EIPA, continues to provide a platform for addressing the shared housing challenges faced by EU Member States.

Exploring Housing Solutions in Maastricht

The first day of the event featured a field trip that brought participants into the heart of Maastricht to explore innovative housing projects. Among the highlights were visits to the Mariaberg and the Blauwe Loper, neighbourhoods showcasing dynamic approaches to urban housing. Participants delved into the development process of these projects, exploring considerations such as sustainability, social inclusivity, and future plans.

Martijn Eskinasi, representing the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations of the Netherlands, highlighted the significance of these exchanges:

The diversity of the members’ backgrounds enriches discussions, shedding light on varied aspects of housing policy and offering unique perspectives. These dialogues are essential for advancing our shared goals.”

Learning from the network

Representatives of Denmark, Portugal and Slovenia presented their housing systems, focusing on aspects such as their legal framework, funding and financing sources, rent policies, and housing allocation processes. Together, participants actively engaged in conversations on governance within organisations, exploring the role of state or municipal supervision and cooperation, while also sharing perspectives and challenges related to affordable housing, fostering a rich exchange of experiences.

Martijn Eskinasi emphasises the benefit of having access to a network dedicated to matters surrounding housing policy:

I regularly turn to the network for practical advice when I need it. The strength of the European Housing Policy Network lies in its ability to bring together diverse expertise from Member States, creating a unique platform for collaboration. By sharing practical solutions and innovative approaches, the network not only helps to address immediate challenges but also fosters a long-term vision for housing policy across Europe. It’s a resource that policy research managers like me rely on to stay informed and inspired.”

Fostering Collaboration Across Borders

The European Housing Policy Network (EHPN) was established to address housing challenges that transcend national borders. Building on the outcomes of its inaugural meeting in Rotterdam earlier this year, this second gathering continued to strengthen the network’s foundations. By bringing together policymakers and experts, the EHPN aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and innovative strategies to promote housing justice across Europe.

The EHPN serves as a collaborative hub for EU Member States’ policymakers, fostering cross-border dialogue and knowledge sharing. By uniting policymakers and experts, the EHPN seeks to empower Member States to champion housing justice and ensure access to safe, affordable, and sustainable housing for all citizens.
