Taking European public administration to the next level: New Director-General for European Institute for Public Administration

Mr Marco Ongaro has taken up his position as Director-General of the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) in Maastricht, the Netherlands, effective from 1 November. Events took place following the appointment by EIPA’s European Board of Governors, chaired by Mr Guy Verhofstadt, member of the European Parliament and former prime minister of Belgium. Mr Ongaro replaces the outgoing Director-General Prof. Dr Marga Pröhl who finished her third mandate on 31 October. The new director of the Institute, which is situated in Maastricht, Luxembourg and Barcelona, is excited about his new position: ‘I am looking forward to my contribution to taking European public administration to the next level through the training, research and consultancy we provide.’

Experience and a strong focus

Marco Ongaro (Belgian and Italian nationality) is a senior executive manager with a strong focus on education management, business development and digital transformation. Having more than 20 years of experience working within international organisations, he spent the main part of his career at Wolters Kluwer (Amsterdam and Brussels) where he has been at the forefront of the company’s end-to-end digital transformation, driving an intense business remodelling, innovation and people development activity. In the last years, he rounded off his competences as Market Director Europe for GHX and Associate Professor at the Louvain School of Management (BE).

Connecting and understanding customers

‘I believe that understanding our customers and being highly visible in our market is the key to a successful future,’ Mr Ongaro states. ‘We need to connect even closer with our clients and stakeholders in order to continue to deliver exactly those services that they require and to spread our knowledge to an even wider audience. And we have to offer our knowledge in more formats, such as digital. I believe that my expertise in this regard as well as my private sector background complements what already exists within EIPA. This will help to increase our value and exposure in European public administration.’
