Registration for our new e-module series, Digital Learning Paths – EU Criminal Law is now open. This online training, developed by EIPA Luxembourg’s European Centre for Judges and Lawyers in partnership with Poland’s KSSIP – Krajowa Szkola Sadownictwa I Prokuratury, provides EU judges, prosecutors, and defense lawyers a structured approach to understanding EU criminal law. Registration is free of charge.
EU criminal law has evolved into a complex, multi-layered regulatory system, encompassing judicial cooperation, substantive law, and procedural guarantees. Our digital learning path addresses the need for legal professionals to gain a cohesive, foundational understanding of EU criminal law principles, going beyond isolated topics to provide an overview of EU competencies, legislative frameworks, and procedural instruments.
The Modules
The course, which is part of the EU funded project DIGICRIM, consists of six e-modules, each covering a core area of EU criminal law. Each module includes resources to facilitate effective learning, including video lectures, case studies, recorded expert discussions, assignments, and quizzes to test knowledge and track progress.
- EU Competence on Criminal Law and Judicial Framework: covers EU institutions, procedures, actors, intervention logic, and key CJEU case law.
- European Arrest Warrant (EAW): examines the role of issuing and executing authorities and grounds for refusal in EAW cases.
- European Investigation Order (EIO): focuses on the procedural aspects and the role of the EIO in cross-border criminal investigations.
- Alternative Measures: discusses EU measures such as the Transfer of Prisoners, European Supervision Order, and European Probation Order.
- Procedural Guarantees: covers key EU directives on rights to information, interpretation, legal representation, and presumption of innocence.
- EU Substantive Criminal Law (PIF Crimes): focuses on crimes affecting EU financial interests and the substantive aspects of EU criminal law.
