EU Fundamental Rights Training for Candidate Countries

News

Last week, EIPA hosted a training on “Fundamental Rights in the European Union: Main Principles and Contemporary Challenges” at its European Centre for Judges and Lawyers in Luxembourg.

The training is an initiative within EIPA’s activities under the 2024 Assistance Convention, facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade (LUX MFEA).  With the support of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, 20 judges, senior officials, and civil servants from EU candidate countries were able to participate in the programme.

It was a very positive experience, highlighting the fundamental principles that support human rights in the EU and the importance of protecting them in the context of social and political changes. The discussions focused on challenges currently facing the EU, such as migration, discrimination, protection of personal data, and the need for a more integrated and collaborative approach among Member States to guarantee these fundamental rights.”

Key topics included:

  • Foundational EU Rights and Protections: examining the Charter of Fundamental Rights and its influence on policy and law.
  • Case Studies in Fundamental Rights: real-world applications, such as the right to data protection and anti-discrimination efforts.
  • International Human Rights Framework: insights into the EU’s relationship with the European Convention on Human Rights and global human rights promotion.
  • Human Rights in Business and Public Sector Obligations: analysis of human rights due diligence and enforcement mechanisms.

The training reflects EIPA’s commitment to equipping legal public and private sector professionals with the knowledge and skills essential for navigating the evolving landscape of EU fundamental rights. Given the success of the course, additional trainings targeting officials from candidate countries are being planned for 2025 to continue this support for EU and neighboring administrations.
