Professional experience

Juan Ignacio González Bastero joined the European Court of Auditors (ECA) in 1999.

Since March 2022, he has served as the principal manager for performance audits in the area of economic governance and Next Generation Funds. Previously, for 10 years, he served as the principal manager financial and compliance audits of economic, social and territorial cohesion policy (ESIF). During this time, he developed and implemented an audit approach based on assessing the control framework and the reliability of the work done by audit authorities and the Commission in Cohesion. This helped to strengthen and improve the control framework for the 2014-2020 programming period. He also managed performance audits dealing with the fight against fraud, financial instruments and accountability in Cohesion.

From 2008 to 2012, he was the Head of the Privat Office of the German Member of the ECA and Dean of Chamber 2. During this period, he supervised financial audits and compliance in the areas of research, transport, energy, and cohesion. From 2002 to 2008, he worked in the Privat Offices of the British and Luxembourgish members where he supervised different compliance and performance audits in the area of research and agriculture.

Prior to joining the ECA, Juan Ignacio was Director of Administration and Finance of Siemens-Nixdorf Retail and Banking Systems, S.L. in Spain and held different audit and management positions for more than 12 years at the Siemens Group in both Germany and Spain.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Administration and an international master’s degree in Business Administration from EAP-ESCP.
