Barry Doherty SC is a practicing barrister, specialising in EU law and public law. He was called to the Irish bar in 1995. Initially he worked at the European Commission’s Legal Service and represented the Commission in a large number of cases before the EU court, in fields ranging from competition to agriculture. He also acted for a time as Senior Legal Adviser to Ireland’s telecommunications regulator. On returning to Ireland in 2008 he took a practice at the Irish bar.
He advises a range of public and private bodies on EU law. He has also appeared in a large number of competition and State aid cases before the Irish and EU courts. He was appointed a Senior Counsel in 2025. He has published widely on European law topics and frequently speaks at legal conferences.
