Marc Maes
European Commission
Marc Maes is a Belgian lawyer and provides consultations and trainings in transparency policy and public access to EU documents.
After obtaining his law degree from the University of Louvain in Belgium, he started his career at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1978. From 1980-2013, he worked in the European Commission in the legal services department, in the Information Technology Directorate, and in the Secretariat-General. For the first eleven years of his career, he was also responsible for managing the CELEX database on community law.
For the years between 1991 and 2000, Marc served as the liaison officer between the Commission and the Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions, and the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament. Subsequently, he joined the ‘Transparency, Relations with Stakeholders and External Organisations’ unit of the European Commission, of which he became deputy head in May 2006.
