Context

The MyVienna project is a digital government initiative launched by the City of Vienna in November 2021. It falls under the broader framework of public service modernisation, a global trend where governments aim to leverage technology to improve accessibility, efficiency and user experience in accessing government services. MyVienna builds upon Vienna’s established reputation as a hub for innovation and seeks to further enhance its digital infrastructure.

Objectives

The project’s primary objective is to provide a user-centric platform for Vienna’s residents to interact with various municipal services seamlessly. This is achieved through a personalised online portal and a mobile application (Stadt Wien-App). Both platforms require users to register for an account, allowing for a customised experience tailored to their individual needs.

MyVienna offers a diverse range of functionalities designed to simplify and expedite citizen interactions with city services. These include the following:

  • Simplified access to online forms and applications: residents can access pre-filled forms for commonly used tasks, such as registering their place of residence, applying for dog licences or requesting parking permits. This eliminates the need for manual form-filling and reduces processing times.
  • Personalised information portal: MyVienna presents users with a curated feed of information based on their interests and preferences. This includes localised news updates, upcoming events and activities in their vicinity, and notifications about relevant city services.
  • Real-time information subscriptions: users can subscribe to receive real-time updates on various aspects of city life, such as public transport schedules, weather forecasts and air quality data. This information is crucial for residents planning their daily activities and making informed decisions.

Implementation

Since its launch, MyVienna has undergone continuous development and improvement, guided by user feedback and departmental requests from within the City of Vienna Administration. This collaborative approach ensures the platform remains relevant and responsive to evolving needs. The project’s success is evident in its strong user adoption, reflected by over 450 000 registered accounts on MyVienna and nearly 420 000 downloads of the Stadt Wien-App. These figures demonstrate the growing digital engagement of Vienna’s population and highlight the increasing importance of technology and innovation in facilitating efficient and user-centric public services.
