Context
Geographical information has increased exponentially in the last decade linked to the development of geographic information technologies as well as the big data paradigm. The Geographic Institute of Aragón (Instituto Geográfico de Aragón – IGEAR) understood that the way to manage the geographical information of the territory was to integrate a geographical knowledge graph into the native Spatial Data Infrastructure already existing 10 years ago. In this way the discovery, the visualisation, the download and the chaining of geographical services makes it a transversal platform of geographic information for the action of the government.
Objectives
The main objective of this project was to create a useful platform for the decision-making of any public or private agent who wants to carry out any project, plan or programme in Aragón. The Spatial Data Infrastructure of Aragón (ICEARAGON) was born thanks to the realisation of the first fundamental step, the publication of Law 3/2022 of 6 October, on geographical information of Aragón (LIGA). This law defines its objectives, principles and scope which make it stand out:
- Improve the quality and level of coverage of geographical information relating to the territory of Aragón.
- Boost the means of disseminating geographical information through the design of a distribution strategy.
- Favour the use of available information by promoting its use under non-restrictive and interoperable criteria.
Implementation
ICEARAGON reaches any public or private actor who can collaborate in the improvement of the geographical information offered by the Administration and in the annual savings of having this technological solution. IGEAR has developed an economic study of the savings of the Administration to have ICEARAGON. The quantitative results are that this technological platform has generated savings to society of €712 130 per year. From the qualitative point of view, the insertion of the graph has meant approximately triple the number of accesses to the platform, as the geographical information is discovered earlier by the end user.
