Context

This project, initiated by the Service Department of Wolfsberg Stadtwerke, aimed to implement biodiversity measures in the Wolfsberg Cemetery and Friedpark. It was driven by a growing awareness of the ecological importance of cemeteries and a desire to give back to nature in a sustainable way. Cemeteries, with their open spaces and mature trees, can be valuable refuges for wildlife in urban areas. The project sought to emphasise this aspect of cemeteries and contribute to the preservation of biodiversity.

Objectives

The Wolfsberg Biodiversity Concept focused on promoting a wide variety of wildlife including flowers, grasses, birds, bats, butterflies and bees. Specific measures included the installation of nest boxes, wildflower beds, insect and bee hotels, dry stone walls and bat boards. These features not only provided habitat for various species but also served as educational tools for visitors of all ages. In collaboration with a local kindergarten, the project even involved children in building and installing ‘wild bee and insect hotels’. Information boards were placed throughout the cemetery to educate visitors about the resident species and the importance of biodiversity.

Implementation

The project prioritised using existing resources and staff from the Service Department of Wolfsberg Stadtwerke. Expertise from Arge Nature Conservation Carinthia provided valuable guidance in selecting suitable sites for biodiversity measures and developing effective implementation strategies. A key challenge involved sourcing materials regionally whenever possible. While this approach ensured sustainability, it also led to delays as suitable materials were not always readily available. The total project budget came in at around €5 000, and up to 20 employees from various departments at Wolfsberger Stadtwerke contributed to its implementation. Importantly, the project fostered collaboration with external partners such as kindergartens and local businesses, further enriching the overall initiative.
