City of Dortmund
During her more than 40 years of professional experience, Harriet Ellwein has worked for several municipal governments and also worked as a freelancer in Europe, Africa and Asia. She holds a degree in geography, sociology and urban and regional planning from the Technical University of Munich and has also completed postgraduate studies on Indonesian language and literature in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
In the field of local and regional economic development Harriet worked for the City of Dortmund where she supported business start-ups and in addressing skills needs. For three years she was assigned by GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit/German International Co-operation Programme) as a program adviser to promote and support local economies and public economic agencies in Central Java, Indonesia.
For the City of Essen Harriet was in charge of several projects of the “International Exhibition Emscherpark” (IBA) and developed approaches to civic participation in politics within the local community. Since 2015 she has been the Deputy Program Leader of the “Nordwärts” project in the City of Dortmund, winner of the Supra-Local and Local Administrative Category in EIPA’s European Public Sector Awards (EPSA) 2017.
She currently works in the Office of the Mayor and the Council in Dortmund with responsibility for city-wide policy development and project management.
