Senior Lecturer
Dr M. Theo JANS (BE) joined EIPA in 2009 as a Senior Lecturer in the Unit “European Decision Making”. He studied Political Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the European University Institute (EUI). He received his PhD in Political Sciences from the VUB in 2001. His doctoral dissertation “Federalism and the regulation of the ethnonational conflict. Joint decision-making in Canada and Belgium” analysed bargaining processes in complex political environments. Theo has worked as a junior professor at Vesalius College (Brussels), at the Brussels School for International Studies (BSIS), at the University of Kent in Canterbury, and at the VUB’s Politics Department and its Institute for European Studies (IES). He has been in charge of the IES Training Unit (2006-2008) and has organised several trainings on decision making for the European Commission and the Belgian Federal Government. His main research interests are European governance, policy-making processes, federalism and institutional conflict regulation. These interests have resulted in several research projects on regional representations and on European integrated product policy. He has published book chapters and articles on conflict regulation, federalism, intergovernmental relations and governance.

Dr M. Theo Jans (BE) a rejoint l’IEAP en 2009 en qualité de maître de conférences dans l’unité « Processus décisionnel européen ». Il a étudié les sciences politiques à la Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) et à l’Institut universitaire européen (IUE). En 2001, il a obtenu son titre de docteur en sciences politiques à la VUB. Sa thèse intitulée « Federalism and the regulation of the ethnonational conflict. Joint decision-making in Canada and Belgium » était consacrée à l’analyse des processus de négociation dans des environnements politiques complexes. Theo Jans a travaillé comme junior professor au Vesalius College (Bruxelles), à la Brussels School for International Studies (BSIS), à l’Université du Kent à Canterbury, au département de science politique de la VUB et à l’Institut d’études européennes (IES) de cette même université. Il a été responsable de l’unité Formation de l’IES (de 2006 à 2008) et a organisé plusieurs activités de formation sur le processus décisionnel pour le compte de la Commission européenne et du gouvernement fédéral belge. Ses intérêts de recherche portent principalement sur la gouvernance européenne, les processus d’élaboration des politiques, le fédéralisme et le règlement des conflits institutionnels. Ces intérêts ont donné lieu à plusieurs projets de recherche relatifs aux représentations régionales et à la politique intégrée des produits en Europe. Il a publié plusieurs chapitres de livres et des articles sur le règlement des conflits, le fédéralisme, les relations intergouvernementales et la gouvernance.
